University Research Grants Program

The University Research Grants Program (URGP) provides operating grants to eligible, full-time faculty at Trent University to support the ongoing development of research in the natural sciences, social sciences and humanities and health studies/sciences.

SSHRC International Travel Grants Program

The purpose of this program is to enable scholars to present a paper in international meetings of major scholarly significance and therefore contribute to the advancement and dissemination of knowledge in the social sciences and humanities. The conference must take place outside Canada.

Vice President Research and Innovation Strategic Initiatives Fund

The Vice President Research and Innovation Strategic Initiatives Fund welcomes requests from all Trent faculty, research organizations, graduate and undergraduate student groups engaged in research, and university staff working within the research enterprise. Funds are directed towards research activities for which other sources of funding are not available.  Requests from academic or administrative departments are not eligible to receive support from this fund.

Request for Residual Funds

NSERC and SSHRC offer an automatic one year extension for some of their grant programs to allow researchers to conclude any outstanding activities and expenditures (e.g. Discovery, Insight).At the end of the automatic one year extension, Research Accounting will close the agency grant account. Should you wish to request access to residual funds you will need to submit an application by the posted deadline.

Deadline:     June 30th

                    (3 months from the terminal end date of the award)

Grant in Lieu of Salary Program

This program permits a Trent full-time faculty member, under certain conditions, to receive a grant in lieu of salary to perform research during a sabbatical or approved research leave only.


October 21st, 2016 for sabbaticals or research leaves scheduled to begin on July 1st, 2017


February 16th, 2017 for sabbaticals and research leaves schedule to begin on January 1st, 2018
