With Trent-ESL, your English proficiency develops as you begin your Trent University experience. Become part of our learning community and realize that your combined experience of Trent-ESL and campus living sets the stage for your undergraduate success at Trent.  

 

What makes Trent-ESL special?

  • A customized curriculum that focuses on your final goal: success in undergraduate and/or graduate study.
  • Outstanding instructors. All full-time ESL faculty hold an M.A., M.Ed. or both. All instructors are TESL certified and have many years of ESL teaching experience from all over the world.
  • Opportunities to advance: our placement process for new students is responsive to your English abilities over time; the decision is not only based on test results.
  • Two campuses for study: choose Peterborough or Oshawa for your ESL and degree experience.
  • Specialized Language Application classes to provide experience and knowledge to  language beyond the typical skills-based lessons.

Did you know?

  • Trent-ESL classes average 13 students per class.
  • We offer 4 intake terms: September, January, April and June.
  • Trent-ESL launched programs at the Oshawa campus in September 2010.
  • Students in the upper levels of Trent-ESL can take credit courses to start their degree while in ESL.
  • Students can be placed directly in Level 4 and Level 5 of our ESL program without taking a placement test upon presenting the following results:

For Level  4

IELTS: 5.5 overall, with a 5.5 in writing

TOEFL IBT: 70

TOEFL PBT: 525

For Level 5

IELTS: 6.0 overall, with a 6.0 in writing

TOEFL IBT: 80

TOEFL PBT: 550

Please note that individual TOEFL bands may be taken into account for placement into Level 4 and 5
